Discover the timeless charm of the vintage Ercol gateleg table, a testament to the enduring appeal of mid-century modern design. This iconic piece, crafted by the renowned British furniture maker Ercol, has captivated generations with its blend of functionality, aesthetics, and craftsmanship.
Understanding the Ercol Gateleg Table
At the heart of the Ercol gateleg table's appeal lies its unique design. A gateleg table, also known as a drop-leaf table, features hinged leaves that can be folded down when not in use, saving space and transforming it into a compact side table. When extended, it provides ample surface area for dining, working, or entertaining, making it a versatile addition to any home.
Ercol, short for Ercolano, is an Italian name that reflects the company's origins. Founded by Lucian Ercolani in 1920, Ercol has been synonymous with high-quality, well-designed furniture for nearly a century. The gateleg table, introduced in the mid-20th century, is one of their most enduring designs.
Key Features of the Vintage Ercol Gateleg Table

Identifying a Vintage Ercol Gateleg Table
If you're on the hunt for a vintage Ercol gateleg table, here are some key features to look for:
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Legs | Ercol gateleg tables typically have characteristic 'S' shaped legs, which are made from solid wood and taper towards the floor. |
| Table Top | The table top is usually made from solid beech wood, with a distinctive grain pattern. It may show signs of wear and tear, adding to its vintage charm. |
| Gateleg Mechanism | The gateleg mechanism should be smooth and functional. If it's stiff or difficult to operate, it may need some TLC. |
| Markings | Look for Ercol's signature stamp or markings, usually found on the underside of the table. These can help authenticate the piece. |
Caring for Your Vintage Ercol Gateleg Table
To ensure your vintage Ercol gateleg table remains a cherished family heirloom for generations to come, here are some care tips:
- Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth to remove dirt and prevent scratches.
- Avoid placing hot dishes directly on the tabletop. Use coasters or placemats to protect the finish.
- Keep the table away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent warping or discoloration.
- If you notice any scratches or marks, gently sand the area with fine-grit sandpaper and apply a suitable wood finish to restore its appearance.
In conclusion, the vintage Ercol gateleg table is more than just a piece of furniture; it's a testament to the enduring power of good design. Whether you're a mid-century modern enthusiast, a fan of vintage furniture, or simply looking for a versatile, high-quality table, the Ercol gateleg table is a timeless choice that's sure to serve you well.
