I came to this sub to search for other posts about smelly drains, and found tons of upvoted recommendations to use products like Drano regularly, or bleach, or boiling water, all of which I know to be horrible for your plumbing. Even vinegar can harm plumbing if it's used very often. So what's up with all this shitty advice?

I have a slow draining sink with exactly this style of drain. I drilled out the center hole and according to my unscientific calculations, before drilling, 10 seconds worth of water from the faucet took 17 seconds to drain. After drilling, 10 seconds worth of water drained in just under 10 seconds.

Treating sink drain gunk? We get regular build-up in our bathroom sink drain that we end up cleaning fairly regularly. It doesn't usually clog the drain but it can smell and we want to keep flow from slowing. It's a pain in the butt to clean manually.

It doesn't need to be clean, it just needs to work. Ice down the garbage disposal, a weekly hot bath for the shower drain, and an occasional kettle of hot water down the bathroom sink is really all I do for my drains. Hi all! I need some help.

I've got a bathroom sink drain that gets smelly, fast. The metal grate does not come up, so I can't scrub efficiently, but I've been using a pipe cleaner (one from a reusable straw kit, that I obviously no longer use to clean straws). It's not perfect, but it's the only thing that will fit down the drain blocker.

So here's what I currently do to clean the drains. Result? My bathroom sink has turned into a veritable science experiment. Drano no longer works as effectively as it once did.

Even when I pour half the bottle down the sink, it's still taking a solid 20+ minutes for my sink to drain. It's about to get worse, too, once I have surgery in a few weeks. We have a bathroom in the basement of our ranch style house.

There is a bathroom in the basement, positioned close to the stack. The shower and toilet are draining fine, but the sink is not. It had been draining very slowly, so i decided to disassemble the p-trap and clean it out, along with the shot vertical drain run from the sink.

The drain in the sink which we use for mouthwash consistently gets clogged by a very repugnant slime. I've tried all the common drain unclogging products (Drano, Liquid Plumber) as well as some non-standard remedies (e.g., boiling water, vinegar + baking soda), but none of them seem to help. Which means that once a year I have to disassemble the entire drain/trap assembly and manually scrub.
