Experiencing erratic temperature when using your bath mixer tap—sometimes only hot, sometimes only cold—can disrupt your shower routine and signal underlying plumbing concerns.

When a bath mixer tap cycles unpredictably between hot and cold, the primary culprits often include issues with the internal thermostatic valve, sediment buildup blocking flow, or a failing temperature sensor. Over time, mineral deposits from hard water accumulate inside the tap’s mechanism, disrupting proper valve operation. Faulty wiring or a loose connection in the control system can also cause inconsistent temperature delivery, leading to frustrating hot-and-cold swings.

Start by checking if the issue occurs across all hot and cold outlets—this helps isolate the problem to the tap itself, not just your shower. Turn off the water supply and inspect visible parts for leaks or mineral stains. If the problem persists, use a temperature gauge to confirm if water is reaching expected settings. If internal components appear worn, professional repair or replacement is recommended to restore reliable hot and cold mixing.

Regular maintenance, such as descaling the tap annually and checking connections, can prevent future temperature inconsistencies. Avoid harsh chemicals that damage seals and components. If DIY fixes fail or the tap shows signs of corrosion, immediately contact a licensed plumber to prevent water damage and ensure safe, consistent water delivery in your bathroom.

Why do mixer taps have backflow problems? It is the height of that cistern above the outlets (taps) which determines the hot water pressure. so via your mixer the cold pressure may prevent a check valve from opening to allow hot to come thru. Why does my shower mixer go cold after a few minutes?

The most common faults with mixer showers are: Intermittently running hot and cold. From our experience, this occurs mostly on combination boiler setups. The usual suspects for this problem are a blocked shower head, kinked or damaged shower hose, or blocked inlet filters in the shower itself.

My basin hot tap is scalding hot if turned all the way to hot, but my hot bath tap is only ever lukewarm. Sometimes it'll go very hot but then cools down after a few seconds. The bath did have a normal hot/cold mixer which I replaced with a thermostatic mixer last week thinking it'd solve the problem.

It hasn't. So i have a bath mixer tap that has a hose that connects to a shower head, if i pull the centre leaver to the right the water gets directed to the shower head and i can get it to the perfect temp using both hot and cold tap ends, which it will stay at for about 2 minutes but then goes stone cold. If you're using a mixer shower that pulls from both hot and cold pipes, and someone starts the washing machine or runs a tap, it can mess with the pressure balance.

The shower runs hot then cold constantly, gradually changing from luke warm/cold to scalding every few seconds. I had a plumber out for a different issue and asked for his advise on the shower, he said that it was either the thermostat within the mixer unit which was faulty or it was because I have "mixed pressures". What is a thermal shock in the shower? Thermal shock occurs when there is a sudden and drastic change in water temperature during a shower.

Excuse me if I misread that but are you using a bath mixer tap with a shower attatchment? try switching it to shower mode, then turn on the hot only, you should get hot water. now try adding the cold water. If the shower runs cold then it sounds like backflow.
