Insulin Resistance in Dogs

In diabetic dogs , many concurrent diseases can cause resistance to exogenous insulin . The most common concurrent disorders in diabetic dogs are hyperadrenocorticism, urinary tract infection, acute pancreatitis, neoplasia, and hypothyroidism. When a concurrent disorder is treated, the insulin dose should be decreased to avoid possible hypoglycemia when an underlying cause of insulin resistance ...

Diabetes Mellitus in Dogs and Cats

Insulin resistance and secondary diabetes mellitus also occur in many dogs that have spontaneous hyperadrenocorticism or that have been chronically administered glucocorticoids or progestins. Pregnancy and diestrus also can predispose an animal to diabetes mellitus.
The most common causes of insulin resistance in diabetic dogs are Cushing syndrome, diestrus, and obesity. Cushing-associated effects include insulin resistance , excessive postprandial hyperglycemia, perceived short duration of insulin action, and/or substantial within-day and/or day-to-day glycemic variability. Successful strategies to manage excessive glycemic variability include basal ...

Treatment for dogs
As with cats, a clinically sick, diabetic, ketotic dog should be admitted for 24 hr care for aggressive therapy of the ketosis and other underlying illnesses. In dogs with subclinical DM, investigate and address causes of insulin resistance , including obesity, medications, hyperadrenocorticism and diestrus in intact females.
