Does a 1991 Toyota MR2 have power steering? When it comes to '90s sports car charm, you can't do much better than the second-generation MR2. The SW20 as it's commonly known, or MKII more familiarly, is a product of a simpler sports-car era. This mid-engine featherweight gets by without traction control, ABS, or power steering.
What is the Toyota MR2 known for? At its introduction in 1984. The power steering is electro hydraulic (electric pump, hydraulic power steering), and yes it is speed sensative. It does not effect the ratio however, just how much assist there is.
Out of all the cars I've ever driven, the mk2 MR2 does have quite heavy power steering. You'd know if it was the relay that wasn't working as you'd get the P/S warning light on the dash. well i have an MK1, but i just disassembled a 92 SW20 for an engine swap and it didnt have power steering on it.
if your not sure about your car, open the engine cover and look for a P/S pump, has to be driven by a belt on the front of the engine, no belt, no pump, no power steering. The power steering pump would be in the frunk not the rear. If you do get power steering for your MR2, it would defeat the entire purpose of the MR2.
The reason why there's no power steering was to eliminate the unnecessary weight created by the power steering rack. But to answer your question simply, adding power steering is going to cost quite a bit and as for parts, ask your local Toyota dealer. The MR2 Spyder is 500 pounds lighter and Toyota wisely decided to make power steering the only option on that car.
My SW20 has power steering and I have driven one with a manual rack and there is a notable difference with the amount of effort required to maneuver the car especially in low speed situations. Power Steering in the SW20 - what makes it so special? So, I've been gathering that the power steering in the SW20 is somewhat special and that the parts are highly sought after not just by us MR2 folks, but also by drifters and other tuners and that they've become increasingly rare because of the demand, not just from the MR2 community. Example, I own 3 91 MR2's 2 of which have power steering and one that does NOT.
All 3 only show Rack and Pinion when you look the steering category in the VIN look up. Power Steering feature is not available in Toyota MR2.Explore more about Toyota MR2Check similar car Toyota MR2 FAQ. I have a 91 MR2 with no power steering, is it hard to add power steering, just the rack and pinion and the power steering pump rite? Thanks, Kevin The Replacement for Displacement is Technology.
