The Eifel Rally Festival in the little town of Daun, Germany is an absolute dream for historic rally car fans, and a few years back in 2016, to mark the 30th anniversary of their banning, 64 monstrous Group B cars were brought together for the biggest gathering of the fabled supercars since their mid-'80s heyday. Toyota very nearly had its own version of the Ford RS200, a mid-engine, all-wheel drive rally car called the 222D. Based loosely on the first-generation MR2, the 222D was Toyota's planned entry.

When Toyota realised that the Celica Twincam Turbo wasn't very competitive outside of Africa, Toyota Team Europe (TTE) started work on a new contender - the 600 horsepower Mk 1 Toyota MR2 Group S Rally. The rally car was codenamed 222D and was being developed for Group S and possibly Group B. A ground up tube chassis car was constructed.
