Meet the Great Spotted Woodpecker
The Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) is a medium-sized woodpecker, measuring around 22-25 cm in length. Its most striking features are its black and white plumage, with a red cap on the head that varies in size between males and females. The male has a red nape, while the female has a red patch at the back of the head. Both sexes have a black back and a white rump, with black and white bars on the wings.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the Great Spotted Woodpecker is its ability to cling to tree trunks and branches, thanks to its strong, curved claws and stiff tail feathers. It uses its strong, chisel-like beak to drill into tree bark in search of insects, larvae, and eggs, producing a characteristic drumming sound that can be heard from far away.
Habitat and Distribution
The Buntspecht is widely distributed across Europe, Asia, and North Africa, preferring habitats with plenty of mature trees, such as forests, parks, and gardens. It is a year-round resident in most of its range, although some northern populations may migrate short distances in winter.
In Germany, the Great Spotted Woodpecker is a common and widespread species, found in a variety of wooded habitats, including deciduous and coniferous forests, as well as urban parks and gardens. It is a protected species under the Federal Nature Conservation Act.
