Easy Chair Crater is unusual, however, in its asymmetric form. It is not just oval, but has the northeast rim some 550 feet higher, which gives it the chair-like form for which it is named.... Easy Chair Crater is a different type of volcano a cinder cone.

Cinder (also called scoria) is a volcanic rock with numerous holes formed by gas escaping from the cooling and crystallizing lava. Easy Chair Crater is one of the first visible craters upon entering the byway. Continuing further youll pass through several rock formations and reach Lunar Crater.

The latest stop on our tour of notable Phantom Frost locations is Easy Chair Crater, NV, which Shivurr sees in the distance after departing Lunar Crater. When viewed from a distance, this craters lopsided rim gives it the look of a recliner, earning it its name. Easy Chair Crater is a Quaternary (less than 1.8 million years old) basaltic cinder cone volcano that is part of the Lunar Crater volcanic field.

Around its rim, you can observe volcanic bombs and a variety of mineral crystals that formed in the cooling magma deep within the Earth. Easy Chair Crater (pictured above) is one of the first volcanic cones you come to after leaving the pavement. Lunar Crater itself is about 3/4 mile wide and up to 400 feet deep, the caldera of an ancient and now-extinct volcano.
