Dossin Museum Gothic Room

The Gothic Room in the Polk Family Hall is the first exhibit you enter when coming into the Dossin Great Lakes Museum. Stepping through its doors is like stepping back in time inside the reconstructed gentleman's lounge of the City of Detroit III, with a window on the right side of the gallery set up as if you're looking out at the Detroit shore line in the early 1900s. The Gothic Room is simply awe-inspiring, with ornate wood, stained glass and chandeliers. This room was where gentlemen once gathered to drink brandy and smoke cigars on the great ship City of Detroit III. The room accoutrements were removed from the ship before it was scuttled and rebuilt within the museum.

After thousands of hours spent restoring and piecing back together the room, volunteers donated the room to the Dossin Great Lakes Museum. When the City of Detroit III was dismantled in 1956, the Gothic Room was salvaged and stored in an Ohio barn for a decade.

After the Dossin Great Lakes Museum was established on Belle Isle, Detroit citizens and maritime enthusiasts raised funds to acquire and restore the Gothic Room. The Gothic Room was the opulent smoking room of the SS City of Detroit III, a side-wheeler steamboat built in 1911 that toured the Great Lakes. De-commissioned in 1950, "The Gothic Room" was removed, and eventually restored as the entrance to the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle Park, in the Detroit River.

Salvaged from the City of Detroit III before it was scrapped in 1956, the Gothic Room spent a decade in an Ohio barn awaiting a new home. After the Dossin Great Lakes Museum was built, Detroiters and maritime enthusiasts raised funds to acquire it. The Dossin Great Lakes Museum is located at 100 Strand Drive on Belle Isle.
