This watercolor records the redecoration of the drawing room at Eastnor Castle, a building designed by Robert Smirke in 1811. Parts of the interior were redesigned by A.W.N. Pugin In 1849-50 in a neo-Gothic style, with much of the work carried out by the London decorating firm of Crace.

Pugin, the pioneer of the arts and craft movement as well as the medieval revival throughout the Commonwealth and Europe, designs Eastnor's Gothic Drawing Room in 1849 as one of his most complete surviving interiors. Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812-52) is widely considered as one of the most significant and influential architects, designers and theorists of the 19th century.
