For generations, the Gothic Reading Room has been a sanctuary for Duke students preparing for exams.
With its high ceilings, arched windows, and timeless quiet, it's been the perfect place to focus and reflect. The Reading Room is such a hidden gem! The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, and the service was truly excellent, warm, attentive, and welcoming. I tried the avocado toast and it was absolutely delicious, fresh, and perfectly seasoned.
The Gothic Reading Room is a conversation between centuries, Versailles befitted with modernist sensibilities, the medieval archways and embellished bookcases offset by a blinking beige thermostat and plastic-sheened tables, each with its own set of sleek charging ports. Richly colored book spines stripe the wooden shelves behind locked glass cabinets, like museum displays with their black and. The Philip Roth Personal Library consists of two spaces, a public gallery and a reading room for researchers and scholars, which is accessible by appointment only.
The Philip Roth Inaugural Exhibition is on view at the gallery during regular library hours. An accompanying audio tour is available.
