Hey guys! So my 1985 BMW K100RS has an almost identical driveshaft situation as my R60: A shaft with a u-joint, ending in a sliding splined interface to the final drive, contained within the swingarm. On the R60 that splined interface is, of course, lubed with oil partially filling the swingarm. I've seen a few mentions in this forum as to that oil being potentially problematic (oil leaking.

Sometimes you just have to know where the "bodies" are buried! I generally don't remember the capacities, but know that the engine is around 2 liters (depending on oil pan of course), the tranny is fill until it comes out the hole, driveshaft is about 100cc, and the final drive is fill to the bottom of the hole (for my /7).

With the bolts out, pull the final drive off the end. Mine spewed a bit of gear oil over the floor and, weirdly, had silicone sealant around the inside to hold the oil in. I guess the final drive leaks a bit and someone decided it was best to keep it all in the shaft housing? This is probably a Bad Thing but could be normal, I dunno.

Hi! Just a week ago I changed my gear- and finaldrive-oil. (K100RT, build 1987.) Always used Putoline 80W-90 'heavy gear' API GL-5 (and never had any problem shifting; smooth as a baby's bum) Good luck and drive safe! Jos.
