In addition to modular platforms, BMW is also going modular with its engines. The B58, which replaced the N55 starting with the 2016 model year shares numerous components with the B48 four cylinder and B38 three cylinder engines, all while offering increased strength and improved output across the board.

Im looking at buying a 2018 m550i (40k miles) but all i ever hear about the n63 are horror stories. Should i just drop my v8 dreams and go for b58 or is this generation even relatively reliable?

B58 vs N63? Reliability 540i or M550i Hey guys, So I'm looking to get a 5 series in the 2018ish year. Miles of the cars I'm looking at are about 80k-95k. Issue I am having is finding the right spec. It seems most of the M550i are optioned out to my taste vs the 540i specs. I was looking at nice 530i but I'm afraid it will feel so.

BMW's S-series engines aren't for daily cruising. They're built by BMW M for one thing: performance. BMW S63 Engine - The Flagship V8 This is the one you'll find in the M5, M8, X5 M, and more. The "hot v layout" is now the configuration in most if not all of the high end V8s (Porsche, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Ferrari and more) and is not reserved only for V8s. The current 4.4L TTV8 is a masterpiece, owners love them. Stick with the most current version. Why not just buy new, you can never go wrong that way. Good luck.

N63 was a huge pile of shit for a long time. The technical updates have done a lot to improve the situation, but I would still consider it to be BMW's least reliable engine currently. OTOH, the B58 is excellent in basically all respects.

N55 vs B58: Battle of the BMW Engines! - YouTube

I'm comparing two 5 series from 2019/2020, both similar mileage (edited to add pricing at the bottom) 540i xDrive M550i xDrive I know the N63 has higher HP, being a "m lite" and lower fuel economy as a result. On the other hand I've heard great things about the B58 being a high Hp engine with good reliability and ability to handle mods well. I've driven the 540 before and love it.
