Hands down the m54 engine, you can also go down the route if 540i cause I'm sure people are going to tell you they are reliable etc etc. My 2¢ is, 530i is just slightly slower than a 540i but with less expenditure on maintenance, fuel etc etc. 540i surely sounds better but for your question power to reliability ratio 530i is king.
