The BMW R 80 G/S is a motorcycle that was manufactured in Berlin, Germany, by BMW Motorrad from 1980 to 1987. Production totalled 21,864 bikes. It was the first in the BMW GS family of specialised dual-sport bikes, of which over 500,000 have been produced, [1] and is often considered the world's first "Adventure Bike" able to be equally capable on and off-road.

Before the BMW R80 G/S made her maiden debut at the Cologne Motorcycle Show in the autumn of 1980 a group of motorcycle journalists were invited to the famous Palace of the Popes, at the city of Avignon in the south of France, for a preview. Each success story has a beginning. For the GS, it all began in 1980, when BMW Motorrad presented the world's first large dual-sport motorcycle in southern France with the R 80 G/S.

Since then, the manufacturer has been setting the benchmark in this segment. And has constantly been writing success stories. The definitive BMW R-GS timeline-from the 1980 R80 G/S to the 2025 R1300GS Adventure, with a final twist: the heritage R 12 G/S.

By July that year, BMW delivered 21,864 bikes which was a seven.
