BMW's own motorcycles-sold under the BMW Motorrad brand-began in 1923 with the BMW R 32, which was powered by a flat-twin engine (also called a "boxer-twin" engine). Production of motorcycles with flat-twin engines continues to this day, however BMW has also produced many models with other types of engines. The boxer engine (also known as flat-twin or "horizontally-opposed") is a signature design that has been a hallmark of BMW motorcycles since the 1920s.

Displacing 1,800cc, the 2021 R 18 cruiser boasts the largest BMW boxer engine ever. But it didn't happen overnight. BMW has been using the boxer engine, a type of flat-twin, in its motorcycles since 1923, when it debuted the original BMW motorcycle, the R 32.

The German automaker still uses it in the bulk of. BMW were not of course the first to mount a flat. BMW got serious about making motorcycle engines in 1923, when aircraft engine designer Max Friz delivered the first flat.

That's the copy from a 1965 ad for the BMW flat twin, commonly referred to as the Slash 2, or /2. Built by Bayerische Motoren Werke between 1955 and 1969, the machines were either a low compression 500cc R50, low compression 600cc R60, or, as introduced in 1956, a high compression R69.
