A concept that changed the motorcycle world: BMW Motorrad celebrates 40 years of the GS A motorcycle concept that is as legendary as it is sophisticated celebrates its anniversary in 2020: The BMW GS models are turning 40. In autumn 1980, BMW Motorrad presented the R 80 G/S, a motorcycle combining off.

That was until BMW introduced the R 80 G/S, a new landmark in motorcycle design for both on and off-road use. BMW's new boxer model offered the first convincing evidence that off-road capability, a high degree of active safety, cornering fun and touring comfort for two people and their luggage could be brought together in the same machine. The BMW G 650 GS was a motorcycle manufactured by BMW Motorrad.

In 2008, BMW launched the G 650 GS, the original single. The telescopic front suspension was one of the company's most enduring early innovations and it remained in use on all of BMW's production motorcycles until 1993, when the new telelever suspension appeared first on a sport touring boxer and then the new R 1100 GS. The legendary BMW GS began in 1980. It was then in southern France when BMW Motorrad presented the world with the first large dual-sport motorcycle, the BMW R80G/S. Two years prior to the release.

The BMW R80 G/S was the first BMW G/S / GS - a motorcycle designed explicitly to serve dual purposes well. Retrospectively, we acknowledge it as being the first BMW purpose-built "adventure bike". It was an inspired concept, and BMW is still capitalising on it to this day.

In September 1980, the launch of the latest BMW two-wheeler revealed a fully-fledged motorcycle with a classic flat-twin Boxer engine, yet it was very different from any BMW that had gone before.
