When maintaining or upgrading a BMW, understanding the difference between thrust arm and control arm is vital for optimal suspension performance. The thrust arm, often integrated into the engine mount system, transfers torque from the transmission to the chassis, reducing driveline movement and enhancing torque delivery. In contrast, the control arm—critical to wheel alignment and suspension kinematics—connects the suspension to the vehicle frame, enabling precise steering response and ride stability. While thrust arms focus on torsional rigidity and engine load management, control arms govern wheel movement, camber, and toe changes during suspension travel. BMW models vary in design; some use independent control arms for dynamic handling, while thrust arms are more common in rear-engine layouts to manage power transfer efficiently. Choosing the right component affects handling precision, tire wear, and overall drivability. For optimal performance and safety, consult a professional or refer to the vehicle’s technical specifications when selecting replacement parts. Prioritize quality to ensure longevity and maintain your BMW’s engineering excellence.

Upper Control Arm (aka Thrust Arm or Tension Strut): this arm is mounted ahead of the lower arm, and the outer ball joint points down. The arm is not straight and has several bends in its shape. Various BMW models use a front suspension setup which feature two lower control arms and a MacPherson strut.

The longer/larger control arm is commonly referred to as the thrust arm but may also be identified as the upper control arm, trailing control arm, tension rod, tension or traction strut. Right? Anyways, everyone is saying what I got is thrust arm bushings but they won't fit on the thrust arms. They're tiny compared to those ones! They look like they'd fit on #12 though.

Some BMWs require the whole arm, but since the shop said they can do just the bushing I'm guessing yours is individually replaceable. If it's the first time replacing the bushing, it's typically cheaper to just get a new bushing pressed in. Typically, we only replace the bushing once.
