A bed takes up a lot of space in a room, and it doesn't need the full room-height. You need enough height above the top of the mattress to be able to sit up comfortable without bumping your head on the ceiling, but anything more than that is "wasted". So elevating the bed, and putting something else under it lets you use the same space twice.
