Whether the bricks are sinking, shifting, or the joints have eroded, this issue is more than just cosmetic; it poses a safety hazard and can lead to further landscape damage. Restoring a stable and level edge requires understanding the root cause and choosing the appropriate repair strategy. Diagnosing the Problem with Your Brick Edge
Before grabbing a shovel, it is essential to identify why the edging is failing. Different symptoms point to different underlying issues that dictate the repair method. A visual inspection and a simple test can reveal whether the problem is surface-level or requires more extensive excavation.
Common Failure Patterns
- Sinking or Settling: The bricks are lower than the surrounding grade, often due to inadequate base compaction or soil erosion.
- Bulging or Buckling: The edge line pushes outward, usually caused by hydrostatic pressure (groundwater) or tree root intrusion.
- Mortar Joint Failure: The sand or mortar between the bricks has washed out, causing instability without necessarily moving the brick itself.
To determine the severity, use a level or straightedge across two adjacent bricks. If the gap is significant or water pools beside the edge, you are likely dealing with a sub-base issue. If the bricks are simply loose but level, the problem is likely a lack of friction in the joint material.

Preparing the Work Area
Proper preparation is the difference between a temporary fix and a permanent solution. Skipping this phase will result in the edging failing again within a few seasons. You must create a stable, well-drained foundation for the bricks to lock into.
Tools and Materials Required
Gather the necessary tools to streamline the process. You will typically need a digging bar, a rubber mallet, a level, a wheelbarrow, a broom, and a plate compactor if the area is large. For the materials, you will need coarse sand or gravel for the base layer, and either polymeric sand or a concrete mix for the joints.

Reinforcing the Edge with Concrete
For permanent stability, especially with tall edging or unstable soil, setting the bricks in concrete is the most effective method. This prevents shifting and sinking, locking the structure in place forever.
The Setting Process
Mix a batch of quick-setting concrete according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Dip the bottom of each brick into the mix before placing it into the trench. This ensures a strong bond between the brick and the base. As you set each brick, check for level and proper alignment using the string line. Tap the brick gently with the rubber mallet until it sits at the correct height. Allow the concrete to cure for at least 24 hours before backfilling the trench.
Backfill the excavated soil on the outside of the edging, packing it tightly to provide lateral support. On the inside of the edge, where the brick meets the walkway or driveway, leave space for the polymeric sand. To activate the binding agent in the polymer, lightly mist the area with water using a garden hose. Avoid using a heavy stream of water, as it can wash the sand out of the joints. Once cured, the sand will harden into a solid, semi-flexible mass that resists washing out and prevents weed growth.
