Eye Prescription Paper Example

If you've recently had an eye exam, you might be wondering what all those numbers on your prescription paper mean. An eye prescription, also known as a refractive error, helps your optician or ophthalmologist determine the correct lens formulation for your eyeglasses or contact lenses. Let's demystify the eye prescription paper with an example and break down each component.

The eye prescription is typically divided into two main sections: refractive error and prismatic balance. We'll focus on the refractive error section, which is the most common and includes your Sphere, Cylinder, and Axis values.

Sphere (Sph)

The Sphere value shows the overall amount of refractive error, or nearsightedness or farsightedness, present in your eye. A negative (-) value indicates myopia (nearsightedness), and a positive (+) value indicates hyperopia (farsightedness). In our example, the right eye has a Sphere of -3.50, and the left eye has -4.00.

Cylinder (Cyl) and Axis

The Cylinder value represents the amount of astigmatism present in your eye. Astigmatism is a condition where the cornea is not completely round, causing blurred vision at both near and far distances. The Axis value indicates the orientation of the astigmatism. In our example, the right eye has Cyl -1.00 at Axis 90, while the left eye has Cyl -1.50 at Axis 180.

Understanding Your Prescription Needs

Once you have your eye prescription, you can use it to purchase eyeglasses or contact lenses. The first number (Sph) is the most important, and it tells your optician the base correction needed. If you also have astigmatism (indicated by a Cyl value), your lenses will need to betoric (shaped differently in one direction) to compensate.

For instance, our example has both Myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism. Therefore, the person will need Toric Lenses with a base correction of -3.50 for the right eye and -4.00 for the left eye, with additional correction for astigmatism at the specified Axis.

Now that you have a better understanding of how to read an eye prescription, you can confidently discuss your needs with your optician or ophthalmologist. Regular eye exams and clear communication about your vision needs are vital for maintaining optimal eyesight.
