Amazon uses slower 10/100 Ethernet on the Fire TV Cube and other devices because you really don't need a faster Gigabit connection. @Supertester The network port is 100Mbps. The only thing you would gain from a faster port on a streaming device is faster app downloads.
Most people do that only infrequently. A wired connection is going to be more reliable than WiFi, so for a streaming device, I would chose it over WiFi whenever possible. The built-in ethernet is ok, 90mb or so on average.
I've got it plugged into a Netgear 8-port gigabit switch, I'm wondering if that's maybe the issue but I haven't noticed a problem with other wired devices. An ethernet port on a device like the Fire TV Cube promises the absolute best internet bandwidth your Internet Service Provider (ISP) can provide, thanks to its wired implementation. Most smartphone internet speeds are faster than 100Mbps nowadays, so, hopefully, Amazon will up the speed on future Fire TV Cube ethernet ports.
One thing that does work in your favor is that 100Mbps can handle almost anything that you might be running in your home. Online gaming, even the graphics intensive, first. The Amazon Fire TV Ethernet Adapter uses only a 100Mbps connection, so 80Mbps actual seems about right.
No streaming service approaches that bit rate, so the only thing a faster connection would gain you is faster app downloads. I would imagine you just plug it in. But the 3rd gen Fire TV Cube only has a 10/100MB Ethernet port, not Gig.
There are currently two variations of Amazon's Fire TV Cube, and there are no ethernet ports on either the first or second-generation Fire TV Cube. You must use an ethernet adapter in order to use an ethernet connection. Thankfully, an ethernet adapter is already included with both devices, saving you from having to buy one individually.
With the Fire TV Cube's ethernet port being 10/100, you won't receiving fast speeds such as your laptop but I'd like you to power cycle your router. You can do this by unplugging it for 30 seconds and unplug your Fire TV Cube as well. Once 30 seconds have passed, plug the router and Fire TV Cube back in, then try a speed test.
I hope this helps. 2nd Gen Firecube, terrible ethernet speed. Upgrade? Hi everyone, I have a 2nd gen firecube.
I used the ethernet adaptor and i am getting speeds from 34-42MPGS. On WiFi: 139-200. I have 400 speed.
Should I get a new adaptor or new cube or both? Thanks Archived post. New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast.
