The rest is completely fair, and is a result of bmw trying to abandon a separate gps with tft functions, and then changing up and producing their OWN gps (with tom tom software) instead of abandoning garmin and just letting it be entirely.
The app shares a common codebase with the new Connected Ride Navigator that replaces the Nav VI - and BMW is committed to this strategy. You won't get all the functionality of a dedicated nav unit but I think its quite good! A short intro video from BMW.
