BMW's M2 has evolved into the M2 Competition for 2019, with myriad enhancements, including a new engine boasting more power. The 2019 BMW M2 is a high-performance rear-wheel-drive coupe that's available in one trim level: the Competition. Most of the features you'd want come standard, and there are only a few packages.
The 2019 BMW M2 has been upgraded and is now available only as the Competition model with more power and better handling. When we tested the new for '16 BMW M2, we called it a mini beast of a performance car that was the closest thing we've driven to a proper M3 in some time. The BMW M2 Competition is frighteningly quick in a straight line, and its short wheelbase lends itself to some hilarious power slides, but it's the curvy roads and tight tracks where this coupe.
The M2 Competition got laryngitis and lost its singing voice when the S55 I6 twin-turbo was shoehorned into its engine bay. The M2's new voice is gruff and gravelly, and the car doesn't croon like it used to with the N55. The M2 Competition is a direct descendant of the iconic E30 M3, which defined the compact sports car segment in the 1980s.
It was introduced in 2018 as a more powerful and track-focused version of the standard M2. The M2 Competition helped BMW stand firm in the compact performance car segment, where the Audi RS3 and Mercedes. The 2019 BMW M2 Competition kicks out 405 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
That dual-clutch unit is a $2,900 option, mind you.
