James Cook Explorer Biography
James Cook, born in Yorkshire in 1728 and killed at Kealakekua Bay in Hawaiʻi in 1779, was a British Royal Navy officer, navigator, cartographer, and commander of three major Pacific voyages that transformed European knowledge of the Pacific and Southern Ocean. He first made his reputation through careful survey work in Atlantic Canada before being selected for the 1768–1771 Endeavour voyage, which was publicly organized to observe the transit of Venus in Tahiti but also carried secret Admiralty instructions to search for the imagined Great South Land. After Tahiti, where Tupaia’s Polynesian knowledge & interpretation became crucial, Cook circumnavigated and charted New Zealand, then mapped Australia’s eastern coast and claimed it for Britain as New South Wales, without Indigenous consent.

James Cook Explorer Country Of Origin
The first voyage of James Cook was a combined Royal Navy and Royal Society expedition to the south Pacific Ocean aboard HMS Endeavour, from 1768 to 1771. It was the first of three Pacific voyages of which Cook was the commander. The aims of this first expedition were to observe the 1769 transit of Venus across the Sun (3–4 June of that year), and to seek evidence of the postulated Terra Australis Incognita or "unknown southern land" | from reading Into the Blue by Tony Horwitz (2002)

In fact, as recently as the mid-18th century, a young sailor named James Cook determined to go "farther than any man has been before me, but as far as I think it is possible for a man to go." And unlike so many others who tried, he did just that. Cook was a war veteran who participated in the Frenc
