'Fort Necessity, July 3, 1754' Artist Stephen Walsh. The battle of Fort Necessity, also known as the Battle of Great Meadows, fits within the so-called Franco-Indian War ( French and Indian War , 1754-1763). This war goes by various names, for example the French Canadians call it 'La guerre de la Conquête' or, rarely, 'the Fourth Intercolonial War' . For Europe this conflict is simply the American theater of the Seven Years' War.
