The Boston Bruins logo is one of the most iconic designs in NHL history, featuring the distinctive bear and its signature "B" mark. For hockey fans and artists alike, learning how to draw the Boston Bruins logo can be a rewarding project that combines precision with a rich sports heritage. Whether you're creating fan art, a scrapbook, or practicing your illustration skills, breaking down this classic emblem into manageable steps will help you capture its bold circular design and fierce character.
Understanding the Logo's History
The Boston Bruins have used several versions of their logo over the years, but the current primary mark—the bold "B" with the bear behind it—carries a legacy stretching back to 1924. Originally, the team featured a simpler "B" on a spoked-wheel design, but the bear was introduced in 1933, giving the mascot its roots as the "Bruins" of Boston. When drawing, it's helpful to study the evolution of the logo to appreciate the iconic simplicity of this design—the classic bear-looking-forward stance against the large, imposing "B" has remained largely unchanged. The bear itself remains a symbol of resilience and grit, which aligns perfectly with the character of Boston hockey. The bear on the logo's history reflects the team's connection to the city and the sport itself.
Gathering Reference Material
A successful drawing requires good references. Start by finding high-resolution images of the original and retro variations of the Bruins logo. Search for "Boston Bruins logo vector" or "Boston Bruins logo high resolution" to ensure you have clean lines to work from. It's also worth looking at the differences between the classic "B" only version, the full logo with the bear, and any retro versions or special edition marks. Having multiple angles and historical references will help you understand the proportions and details of the bear's expression, the thickness of the "B," and the layered structure of the design.
Basic Drawing Process
The Boston Bruins logo is essentially built around a circular framework. Start with a large circle using a circle template or ruler, then draw a perfect circle to serve as the outer boundary of the logo. Next, divide this circle into sections to place the bear and the "B" accurately. The bear stands prominently behind the letter, facing forward with a determined expression; sketch its head, torso, and paws first in simple geometric shapes. The "B" should be bold and blocky, centered within the circular border. Pay attention to the thick strokes and the slight curves at the top and bottom of the letter for authenticity.
Shading and Coloring
The color palette of the Bruins logo is straightforward but striking. Use black as the dominant color to fill the bear and outline the circle. The "B" itself is typically rendered in white with a black outline, contrasting against the dark brown of the bear. Apply shading to the bear's body using dark brown tones, and carefully color inside the lines of the inner logo elements. A reference chart of Pantone 1245 C (the off-white) and Pantone 469 C (dark brown) will ensure color accuracy when coloring your drawing.
For the finishing touches, add thin black linework to reinforce the circular border and bring out the details of the bear's anatomy. Erase any remaining pencil guidelines, and if working digitally, merge layers to create a clean final result. To practice variations of the logo, experiment with the retro "B" only version, the special bear-only mark, or even the full circular design with different historical styles. The rich history of the Boston Bruins logo offers a wide range of challenges for any artist looking to improve their technical drawing skills through this classic sports icon.
