The average value of a function on an interval flattens the area under its curve into a rectangle of the same width. f̄ = 1/(b − a) ∫ₐᵇ f(x) dx The horizontal line at height f̄ cuts the curve so that the excess above it exactly cancels the deficit below: the two areas are equal. The integral mean value theorem states there exists c in the interval with f(c)·(b − a) = ∫ₐᵇ f(x) dx. Rearranged, that says f(c) = f̄, so a continuous function actually attains its own average somewhere.
Learning Target: increasing, decreasing or constant intervals of Functions for Key Features of Functions High School AlgebraThis lesson starts with a picture warm up to get students thinking about direction. Connect average rates of change to the derivative through six worked calculus revision cards. Calculate a secant slope of 5 for x squared on the interval from 1 to 4, use the limit definition to find a tangent slope of 6 at x = 3 and write the line y = 6x − 9. A position model gives average and instantaneous velocity examples in feet per second. Check function values, derivative existence and units, then save this study sheet and explore the matching NUM8ERS introduction to derivatives lesson.
