A fun foldable to teach or review finding the standard deviation of a sample. The foldable defines standard deviations, lists the steps to find standard deviation, and has two examples. The first example is a small sample that you can teach students how to find the standard deviation by hand. The second example has 3 standard deviations that must be matched with 3 dot plots by understanding the meaning of small and large standard deviations.

Standard Deviation: A 5 Step Process 1. Calculate the mean. 2. Calculate the differences from the mean. 3. Square these differences from the mean. 4. Find mean of square differences (variance) 5. Take square root of the deviance. Source: The Math Dude

University - STANDARD DEVIATION (SD) Standard deviation measures how spread out the data are around the mean (average). It shows the typical distance of observations from the mean. WHAT SD TELLS US: • Small SD → values are close to the mean. • Large SD → values are widely dispersed. • SD = 0 → all observations are identical. • SD is expressed in the same units as the original data. • SD alone does NOT tell you whether data are normally distributed. EXAMPLE: Two groups can have the same mean but different SDs. Group A: Mean = 70, SD = 3.2 → values are close to 70. Group B: Mean = 70, SD = 12.8 → values are more widely spread. COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS: ❌ SD is not the same as the mean. ❌ A larger SD does not mean the mean is larger. ❌ SD does not tell you the shape of the distribution. ❌ SD is not the same as variance. Variance = SD² TAKEAWAY: Standard deviation tells you how much the data vary or spread around the mean. It is a key measure of variability in research and data analysis. | Facebook

How to Calculate a Sample Standard Deviation

Intro To Standard Deviation

This is set contains two standard deviation graphic organizers for students just introduced to the concept of standard deviations, students having trouble calculating the standard deviation of a data set, or students who require graphic organizers as a classroom accommodation. The first organizer has a given data set (10 numbers total) and students fill in the boxes as they progress through each step of finding the standard deviation. The second does not give a data set, but is set up to work with 10 numbers. The students can be guided through the first graphic organizer, then work independently with the second, then make comparisons with the two data sets. The steps used assume that 10 is the population, where the sum of squares is divided by 10 (N), instead of (n-1).
