What are intervals? A interval is the distance between any two notes. The two different types of intervals are called MELODIC (this means playing the notes separately) and HARMONIC (this means playing them at the same time). A melodic interval you can either play from low to high (which is called ascending) or from high to low (which is called descending) When labeling an interval there are two distinct steps you need to go through: 1. The distance of the interval - between the two notes. 2. The intervals quality. To indentify an interval, count the number of steps starting with the first note. The same rule applies to identifying intervals on the sheet music: count the number of lines and spaces between each note, including the line/space the current note is on.
