Half Square Triangle Heart Quilt Pattern

The Half Square Triangle (HST) is a quilting staple that forms the basis of many patterns. For this heart quilt pattern, we'll utilise HSTs to create a whimsical, repeating heart design.

To create each heart, you'll need to make four HSTs in your chosen fabric. Once sewn together, they'll form a perfect little heart. Repeat this process to create an entire row of interlocked hearts. This pattern is as romantic as it is simple.

You'll need fabric (preferably in striking contrast for a bold effect), a rotary cutter, a ruler, and a sewing machine. Don't forget to account for seam allowances when cutting.

For a simple 12” heart quilt, you'll need 1 (1/4 yard) of each fabric for the heart and background. A 1/2 yard of backing fabric and 1/2 yard of batting should complete the kit.

Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of your fabric. Place it right sides together with another piece of fabric, then sew 1/4” from either side of the line. Cut along the line and you'll have two HSTs with one fabrics on top and the other on bottom.

Press the HSTs open, then trim them to size. Voila! You're ready to create your hearts.

Materials Needed

Assorted fabrics for each heart, a rotary cutter, and your sewing machine. Also, don't forget a disappearing nine-patch ruler if you have one. It'll make quartering your squares a breeze!

For a simple 36” x 36” quilt, you'll need 27 (6.5" x 6.5") squares for the hearts and a total of 25 (12.5" x 12.5") squares for the background and borders.

Piecing the Hearts

Cut your squares in half diagonally to form two triangles. Sew one heart-sized square right sides together with a piece of backing fabric. Quarter your square using a nine-patch ruler (or mark 1/4 from each corner).

Sew around the marked lines, then cut apart at the seams. Press the pieces open to reveal your heart shapes. Repeat this process for all hearts in your chosen fabric scheme.

Quilting these simple heart patterns is a labor of love that yields comforting, cherished results. They're perfect for expressing your creativity and making something truly unique. Happy quilting!
