Before you begin, ensure you have a square piece of paper. Traditional origami uses one side of a standard 6x6 inch (15x15 cm) sheet, but any brightness and color will do. Let's dive into our 11-step journey to create a beautiful origami crane.
Base and Wing Construction
The foundation of our crane is the preliminary base. This base will serve as the structure for both the wings and body of our crane.
Begin by laying your square paper flat, colored side facing down.
Step 1: Square Base
Turn your paper into a square base by folding it in half diagonally, then unfolding it back into a square. Next, fold it in half along the other diagonal and unfold.
You'll notice two creases intersecting at the center of your paper. This is your square base. Ignore the outer squares as we begin our base.
Step 2: Fold a Pocket
Fold your paper in half horizontally. Open it back up, then fold it in half vertically, creating an 'X' crease. Open it back up again.
Now, fold your paper in half along one of the outside creases, making a triangle. Unfold slightly, push the tip into the pocket you've just created, and flatten.
Forming the Wings
With our base established, we can now focus on creating the wings that give our crane its graceful appearance.
Keep your paper folded in a triangle, colored side facing you.
Step 3: Fold and Unfold Wings
Fold the top layer inward, along the center line. Unfold. Turn your paper over.
Fold the top layer inward again, this time towards the same side as the previous crease. Unfold.
Step 4: Square the Upenticles
Bring the two upper points together and flatten them. Turn your paper over.
Repeat this process on the other side, working carefully to maintain the shape of your base.
The Body and Tail
Our crane is starting to take shape! Now, let's focus on forming the body and extending the distinctive tail.
Your paper should still be in a diamond shape, with the colored side facing you.
Step 5: Fold the Body
Fold your paper in half along the center vertical line. Open it back up, then unfold the two layers at the top, creating a pocket.
.Insert the tip of the top layer into this pocket and flatten.
Step 6: Extend the Tail
Fold your paper in half horizontally, crease, and unfold. Fold it in half vertically, creasing and unfolding again. Open your wings to expose the body.
Fold the tip of the body downward, along the horizontal crease you've just created. Unfold.
The Head and Final Touches
The final steps involve finely crafting our crane's head and completing its classic form.
Your paper should be in a diamond shape, with the colored side facing you and the wings extended to either side.
Step 7: Fold the Head
Push the top two corners downwards, towards the center line. Your wings should arch slightly upward.
Fold the top layer up, creating a small triangle at the head. Turn your crane over.
Step 8: Complete the Head
Fold the head back downwards, creating a flat surface. Open your wings carefully to ensure the head is where you want it.
Fold the tail downwards, along the horizontal crease. Flatten your crane gently to complete its classic form.
