Preparing Your Paper
Origami begins with a simple square. For our koi, we recommend using origami paper, often called 'kami' in Japan. Its precise size (6" x 6" or 15cm x 15cm) and thin, smooth texture make it ideal for intricate models like the koi.
If you prefer to use regular paper, you can create a square by folding a letter-size sheet in half diagonally, then unfolding and folding it again along the opposite crease. Each fold will trim off the excess paper.
Choosing Your Coloration
While our guide focuses on a traditional white koi, the art of origami encourages creativity. Feel free to use colored paper to create an orange, black, or Patrick's Day green koi. The instructions remain the same regardless of color.
For a bicolor koi, simplify your life by using wet-folding techniques. After soaking your paper in water, carefully fold it in two. Let it dry completely and unfold it back into a square. Now you're ready to start folding the head with one color on the inside and the other on the outside.
Folding the Basic Koi Body
The koi's body is essentially a fish base with modifications for the tail and head. The first steps are identical for both the tail and head versions, so follow them carefully and patiently.
Begin by folding your square in half diagonally to create a triangle. Fold it again in half along the other crease to form a smaller triangle. Unfold the last fold, then fold the two new top corners to the center point, creating a kite shape.
Creating the Koi's Tail
Flip your kite over so the open end faces you. Fold the top layer of the top corner to the center crease, then unfold it. Repeat with the other side. You should now have a small x-mark at the top.
Fold the paper in half horizontally, creasing well. Unfold, then fold the top two corners to the center. Notice how the tail is starting to take shape? Now, fold both sides of the top layer to the center. Finally, refold the paper in half horizontally and smoothly flatten it to reveal your beautifully symmetrical koi tail.
Forming the Koi's Head
Follow the same steps as the tail until you've created the kite and x-mark. This time, instead of folding the top two corners to the center, fold them into the center point. After unfolding, you'll have a 3D met-like structure. Flip it over and fold the top and bottom layers of the top corner to the center, as before, then refold in half horizontally.
Unfold the last fold. Fold the top vertex back to the center crease, then unfold. Now refold the model in half horizontally. Flatten it and admire your koi's head – it's starting to look like a fish!
Adding Details and Finishing Touches
Whether you're making a tail or a head, use the same steps to create fins. For the tail, fold the top layer of the tail edge up and flatten it. For the head, gently press from the side to create the fish's head folds.
For both, use your finger to subtly round the edges of the body and fins, giving your koi a more natural appearance. Gently pull apart the layers to separate the head or tail, and your koi fish is ready to swim into your origami collection!
