Hill House Drawing Room Table From the mother-of-pearl inlay, to the to repeating grid, to the shelves, to the top, the square dominates in this low table designed for the Hill House drawing room. At 25″ high, it is too tall for a coffee table and too short for comfortable dining, but it would serve for cards or games. Drawing room, 2018 The Hill House was purposefully designed to embrace and celebrate the arts of interior design, crafts and decoration which were traditionally seen as feminine - particularly when compared to the 'masculine' art of architecture.

The interiors of the Hill House could really be dissected forever. They offer a striking balance between art nouveau flourishes and a more minimal approach to modern functional design or in other words it is a balancing act between industrial and natural influence. Contrast exists everywhere.

Made of poplar and plywood, assembly requires only simple tools, materials and techniques. Square table in ebonised ash, fitted with a drawer with an inlaid knob The lower cross is fitted with a top also decorated with inlays The construction of this table was carried out according to data acquired from the original drawing owned by the Hunterian Art Gallery, Glasgow University.

Immediately beyond the entrance are a library and business-room with small, slit windows overlooking the approach to the house. From the outer hall a short flight of steps leads up to the main, dark-beamed hall, providing circulation into the drawing. Mackintosh's wife, the artist Margaret Macdonald, collaborated with him on The Hill House's fairy tale interiors - from the enchanted woods of the entrance hall, to the elegant rose garden of a drawing room with its extraordinary "Sleeping Princess" gesso above the mantle, to the embroidered panels of dreaming women surrounding the bed.
