Can You Cover an Egress Window? Safety & Code-Compliant Solutions

Egress windows are critical for safety, providing vital emergency exit routes and ventilation—so can you cover one without violating codes or compromising safety?

Can You Cover an Egress Window?

Covering an egress window is generally not permitted under building codes because it blocks essential emergency egress, reduces natural light, and disrupts ventilation. While cosmetic or functional modifications might seem practical, doing so without proper permits risks violating local regulations and endangers occupants. Always verify compliance with local building codes before any alteration.

Safety and Code Requirements

Egress windows must meet strict safety standards, including minimum dimensions, clear opening paths, and unobstructed access. Covering them compromises these requirements, increasing risks during fires or emergencies. Building codes like the International Residential Code (IRC) explicitly prohibit blocking these openings, emphasizing their role in life safety.

Alternatives to Covering an Egress Window

Instead of covering, consider solutions like installing protective covers that allow operation, using window inserts for privacy without blocking, or relocating fixtures to maintain clear access. These alternatives preserve safety, code compliance, and natural light while keeping windows functional and secure.
