How to Measure Curtains for Windows UK: Perfect Fit Every Time

Getting curtains just right transforms any window into a stylish focal point—especially in UK homes where precision ensures a seamless look. Measuring curtains correctly prevents wasted fabric and awkward gaps, saving time and money. This guide reveals expert techniques for measuring curtains for UK windows with confidence.

How to Measure Window Width for Curtains

Begin by measuring the full width of your window, including sills and any architectural features. Use a flexible tape measure to capture the exact width from one side to the other. For double-hung windows, measure both sides separately—some may differ due to frame depth. Always add 2 inches to the total width to accommodate for seams and ensure a tailored fit without bulk.

Measuring Curtain Height for Perfect Fall

Measure from the ceiling to the desired curtain hang point, typically 12–24 inches below the window frame, depending on room style. For tall windows, measure from floor to ceiling to maintain proportion. Cut the top hem 1–2 inches longer than your measured height to allow for adjustment and secure hanging. Use a level to ensure straightness once installed.

Accounting for Trim and Window Frame Depth

Factor in any existing trim or decorative edging along the window frame, especially in traditional UK homes. Measure the frame’s depth to select curtains that frame the window without bulk. For sash windows, measure both the width and depth to choose curtains that complement the panes and enhance architectural detail.

Pro Tips for Accurate Curtain Measurement

Mark measurements on a piece of paper to cross-check before cutting. Use a retractable tape measure for accuracy and avoid slack. If unsure, measure twice—curtains that fit perfectly become a defining element of your interior.
