Elevate Your Beauty Routine: A Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a DIY Floating Makeup Vanity
Are you tired of cluttered countertops and limited space in your bathroom? It's time to transform your beauty routine with a stylish and functional DIY floating makeup vanity. Not only does this storage solution save space, but it also adds a touch of elegance to your room. Let's dive into the world of DIY and create a stunning floating makeup vanity that you'll love.
Gather Your Materials and Tools
Before you start, make sure you have all the necessary materials and tools at hand. Here's a list to help you get started:
- 1x8 board (8 feet long)
- 1x2 board (8 feet long)
- 1/4" plywood (2' x 4')
- 1 1/4" pocket hole screws
- 1 1/4" Brad nails
- Wood glue
- Stain or paint (your choice of color)
- Polyurethane
- Hole saw bit (for plumbing access)
- Jigsaw
- Drill
- Miter saw
- Clamps
- Safety glasses
- Sandpaper (120 and 220 grit)
Design and Measure Your Vanity
First, decide on the size and shape of your floating makeup vanity. For this project, we'll create a simple, rectangular vanity with a 24" width and 16" depth. Sketch your design and measure twice to ensure accuracy.

Cutting the Pieces
Using your miter saw, cut the following pieces from your 1x8 and 1x2 boards:
| Board | Piece | Quantity | Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1x8 | Top | 1 | 24" |
| 1x8 | Bottom | 1 | 24" |
| 1x8 | Sides | 2 | 16" (cut at a 45-degree angle) |
| 1x2 | Back | 1 | 24" (cut at a 45-degree angle) |
| 1x2 | Supports | 2 | 15 1/2" (cut at a 45-degree angle) |
Assemble the Vanity Box
Apply wood glue to the edges of the side pieces and attach them to the top and bottom pieces using 1 1/4" pocket hole screws. Ensure the sides are flush with the top and bottom. Next, attach the back piece using wood glue and 1 1/4" brad nails. Finally, add the support pieces to the inside of the vanity, securing them with wood glue and 1 1/4" brad nails.
Create the Shelf and Door
Using your 1/4" plywood, cut a 22" x 15 1/2" shelf and a 23" x 15 1/2" door. Sand both pieces smooth and stain or paint them to match your vanity. Once dry, attach the shelf to the inside of the vanity using 1 1/4" brad nails. For the door, attach it to the front of the vanity using hinges, ensuring it opens and closes smoothly.

Add Finishing Touches
Sand the entire vanity with 220-grit sandpaper, removing any rough edges or imperfections. Apply a coat of polyurethane to protect the finish and add durability. Allow it to dry completely.
Install the Floating Makeup Vanity
Mark the location of your vanity on the wall, ensuring it's level. Using a hole saw bit, create a hole in the back of the vanity for plumbing access. Attach the vanity to the wall using wall anchors and screws, ensuring it's secure and level. Plug in your lights and enjoy your new floating makeup vanity!
Creating a DIY floating makeup vanity not only adds functionality to your space but also showcases your creativity. With a little bit of effort and the right materials, you can transform your bathroom into a stylish and organized sanctuary. Happy building!
