Transform your bathroom into a cozy, inviting space with a DIY rustic bathroom vanity. This comprehensive guide walks you through the process of building a charming, functional vanity that complements your rustic decor. With the right materials and tools, you can create a stunning piece that enhances your bathroom's aesthetic and provides ample storage.
Gather Your Materials and Tools
Before you begin, ensure you have all the necessary materials and tools for your project. Here's a list to help you get started:
- Plywood (3/4" thick)
- 2x4 lumber
- 1x4 lumber
- 1x6 lumber
- Wood glue
- Screws (1-1/4", 2", and 2-1/2")
- Stainless steel sink
- Faucet and hardware
- Sandpaper (120-grit and 220-grit)
- Wood stain
- Polyurethane
- Circular saw
- Drill
- Jigsaw
- Orbital sander
- Clamps
- Tape measure
- Pencil
Design and Measure
Determine the dimensions of your vanity based on your bathroom layout and personal preferences. For this guide, we'll create a vanity that's 60" wide, 21" deep, and 36" tall. Sketch your design, including the sink, faucet, and storage compartments.

Create the Vanity Base
Start by building the vanity's base using 2x4 lumber. Cut the following pieces:
- Two 60" long pieces for the top and bottom
- Two 21" long pieces for the sides
- Two 14" long pieces for the back
Assemble the base using wood glue and 2" screws. Ensure the corners are square and the base is sturdy.
Add Legs and Supports
Cut four 1x4 legs, 36" long each, and attach them to the base using wood glue and 2-1/2" screws. Space them evenly, 12" apart, to provide stability and support. Add two 1x4 cross braces, 21" long, between the legs to reinforce the structure.

Build the Vanity Top
Construct the vanity top using 3/4" plywood. Cut the following pieces:
- One 60" x 24" piece for the top
- Two 60" x 1-1/2" pieces for the sides
- Two 24" x 1-1/2" pieces for the back
Assemble the top using wood glue and 1-1/4" screws. Attach it to the vanity base using 2" screws.
Create Storage Compartments
Design and build storage compartments to suit your needs. For this guide, we'll create two open shelves and two drawers. Cut the necessary pieces from 1x6 lumber and 1/4" plywood, and assemble them using wood glue and 1-1/4" screws.
Install the Sink and Faucet
Measure and mark the sink hole on the vanity top. Use a jigsaw to cut out the hole, ensuring it's the correct size for your sink. Install the sink and faucet according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Sand, Stain, and Seal
Sand the vanity thoroughly using 120-grit sandpaper, followed by 220-grit sandpaper. Wipe off any dust, and apply your chosen wood stain. Allow the stain to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions, then apply a polyurethane sealant to protect your vanity.
Final Touches
Install hardware, such as knobs and pulls, on the drawers and shelves. Allow the polyurethane to cure completely before using your new rustic bathroom vanity.
