Hardwiring LED Mirrors: A Comprehensive Guide
LED mirrors are a stylish and energy-efficient addition to any home. While pre-wired options are available, hardwiring your LED mirror allows for a cleaner, more professional look and better control over your lighting. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you through the process.
Gather Your Tools and Materials
Before you start, ensure you have all the necessary tools and materials:
- LED mirror
- Wire stripper
- Screwdriver (Philips or flathead, depending on your mirror's screws)
- Wire nuts
- Electrical tape
- Fish tape (optional, for running wires through walls)
- Wire connectors (if not using wire nuts)
- Power drill (if running wires through walls)
Safety First: Turn Off Power
Always prioritize safety when working with electricity. Turn off the power to the circuit you'll be working on using your home's main electrical panel. You can use a non-contact voltage tester to ensure the power is off before proceeding.

Remove the Mirror from Its Frame
Using your screwdriver, remove the screws securing the mirror to its frame. Carefully lift the mirror out, ensuring it's supported to prevent breakage. Set the frame aside.
Identify the Wires
Your LED mirror should have two wires: one for the positive (hot) terminal and one for the negative (neutral) terminal. The hot wire is usually red, while the neutral wire is usually black or white. If your wires are not color-coded, consult your mirror's instructions or look for the word "neutral" printed on the wire.
Run the Wires Through the Wall
If your mirror is going into a new location, you'll need to run the wires through the wall. Use a stud finder to locate the studs in your wall, then use a power drill to create a hole large enough for your wires. Use fish tape to pull the wires through, if necessary.

Connect the Wires to the Power Source
Run the wires from your mirror to the nearest junction box. If there's no existing wire in the junction box, you'll need to run a new one from your circuit breaker. Once you have both wires in the junction box, strip about 3/4 inch of insulation from each wire using your wire stripper.
Connect the Hot Wire
Connect the hot wire (usually red) to the black (hot) wire in the junction box using a wire nut. Twist the wires together clockwise, then screw on the wire nut. Tighten securely, but be careful not to strip the wires.
Connect the Neutral Wire
Connect the neutral wire (usually black or white) to the white (neutral) wire in the junction box using another wire nut. Follow the same process as with the hot wire.
Secure the Wires and Test Your Mirror
Wrap electrical tape around the wire nuts to secure them and prevent them from loosening over time. Then, carefully replace your mirror in its frame and secure it with screws. Turn the power back on at your electrical panel and test your mirror to ensure it's working correctly.
Professional Help: When to Call an Electrician
While hardwiring an LED mirror is a relatively simple task, it's always a good idea to call a professional electrician if you're unsure about any part of the process. They can ensure your work is safe and up to code, giving you peace of mind.
