Hardwiring a Lighted Mirror: A Comprehensive Guide

Safety First: Tools and Materials Needed
Before we dive into the installation process, let's ensure you have the right tools and materials:
- Lighted mirror (ensure it's hardwired and suitable for your needs)
- Wire stripper
- Screwdriver (Philips or flathead, depending on your mirror's screws)
- Wire connectors (wire nuts)
- Electrical tape
- Fish tape (for running wires through walls)
- Wire cutter/stripper
- Power drill (for making holes in the wall)
- Safety glasses
Understanding Your Mirror's Wiring
Most hardwired lighted mirrors come with a junction box and two wires: black (hot) and white (neutral). The green or bare copper wire is the ground. Familiarize yourself with these wires before starting the installation.
Preparation: Turning Off Power and Running Wires
First, turn off the power to the area where you'll be working at the circuit breaker. Test the wires with a voltage tester to ensure they're not live. Next, run the electrical cable from your existing lighting circuit to the location where you'll mount the mirror. Use a fish tape to run the cable through the wall if necessary.
Mounting the Mirror
Using the appropriate screws and wall anchors, mount the mirror to the wall. Ensure it's level and secure. Once mounted, feed the electrical cable through the knockout hole in the back of the mirror's junction box.
Connecting the Wires
Strip about 3/4 inch of insulation from each wire using your wire stripper. Connect the black wire from the cable to the black wire from the mirror, and the white wire from the cable to the white wire from the mirror. Twist the wires together clockwise, then secure them with a wire connector (wire nut). Ensure the connections are tight and secure.
Connect the ground wire (green or bare copper) from the cable to the ground wire from the mirror. Again, twist the wires together clockwise and secure them with a wire connector.
Securing the Wires and Testing
Wrap each wire connection with electrical tape to secure them and prevent any potential short circuits. Once all connections are secure, carefully tuck the wires back into the junction box and secure the box to the mirror.
Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker and test your lighted mirror. If it illuminates as expected, you've successfully hardwired your mirror!
