If I had to pick just one, the x3m seems like it would give me the practicality of an suv with the fun of a twin turbo in-line 6 that I love in the m440i, assuming you're talking about one of the newer ones. Go test drive them both and see if the added usefulness of the suv outweighs the probably better performance of the m340i.

Will try to compare against the S5 on the same road at some point. This is a follow-up to my post from last week on "why did you pick BMW over Audi" and as far as driving experience I totally get it now with BMW. Otherwise even in comfort mode the suspension is kinda busy and jiggly.

The S5 was definitely a smoother ride on imperfect roads. The M340i is award-winning from what I've heard and has a great balance between performance, comfort, and reliability. I guess the question is how often do you need to transport more than yourself?
