Carpeting your stairs can significantly enhance the aesthetics and comfort of your home. However, installing carpet on stairs requires careful planning and execution. This guide will walk you through the process, from measuring and choosing the right carpet to installing it safely and securely.

Before you begin, ensure you have the right tools and materials. You'll need a tape measure, chalk line, utility knife, stair tool or knee kicker, carpet stretcher, carpet tack strip, and, of course, the carpet itself. Safety first: wear safety glasses and gloves throughout the process.

Preparation and Measuring
Start by measuring your stairs. The width of the stairs will determine the width of your carpet. For the length, add 3 to 4 inches to the total rise of your stairs to account for the nosing (the edge that overhangs the step).

Next, calculate how much carpet you need. Multiply the width of your stairs by the total length, including the nosing. Add 10% extra for waste and seams. If your stairs are wider than 47 inches, you'll need to order two widths of carpet and seam them together.
Choosing the Right Carpet

Stairs see a lot of foot traffic, so durability is key. Consider a dense, low-pile carpet with a heavy-duty backing. Berber, saxony, and frieze styles are popular choices for stairs. Also, consider the color and pattern; darker colors and busy patterns can help hide dirt and wear.
Don't forget to choose a carpet pad. A dense, thin pad is best for stairs. It provides cushioning without adding too much height, which could cause tripping hazards.
Preparing the Stairs

Before you start installing the carpet, prepare your stairs. Remove any old carpet, tack strips, and nails. Sand down any rough spots and vacuum thoroughly to remove all dust and debris.
Install a new tack strip at the top and bottom of each step. The strip should be about 1/2 inch from the edge of the step. Use a brad nailer to secure it in place. Also, install a new strip along the nosing of each step, about 1/2 inch from the edge.
Installing the Carpet

Start at the top of the stairs. Unroll the carpet, allowing it to hang over the top step. Use the stair tool or knee kicker to secure the carpet to the tack strip at the top of the step. Work your way down the stairs, securing the carpet to the tack strip on each step.
When you reach the nosing of each step, use the utility knife to cut the carpet to fit. Make sure the cut is straight and smooth. Then, use the stair tool or knee kicker to secure the carpet to the tack strip on the nosing.

Securing the Carpet
Once the carpet is secured to the tack strips, use the carpet stretcher to pull the carpet tight and smooth out any wrinkles. Start at the top of the stairs and work your way down. Make sure the carpet is taut but not so tight that it causes the steps to bow.
Use the utility knife to trim any excess carpet from the edges of the steps. Be careful not to cut the carpet too short; you can always trim more off later if needed.
Finishing Touches
Inspect your work. Make sure the carpet is securely attached to the tack strips and there are no wrinkles or bubbles. Trim any loose threads or fibers with the utility knife.
Finally, vacuum the stairs to remove any loose fibers or dust. Your stairs are now ready to be enjoyed, providing comfort and style for years to come.
Regular maintenance, such as vacuuming and spot cleaning, will help keep your stair carpet looking its best. If you notice any wear or damage, don't hesitate to repair it promptly to prevent further issues. Happy stair carpeting!
