Manteca is an interesting place. The city was originally named after its founder, Joshua Cowell, back in 1861. Both the town's train station and town's name were adamantly branded with the same name. There was already a Cowell Station in San Joaquin county, so the name Cowell wasn't considered. At the time of filing the papers, officials made a mistake in printing Monteca.
In any case, the townspeople liked the new version better, and resubmitting paperwork then was more trouble than it was worth. Manteca is the Spanish word for butter or lard in the common tongue south of the border. Apparently, generations have survived that easygoing energy.
