History of Fort Gregg-Adams

Constructed in 1864, Fort Gregg-Adams was one of the many fortifications built by the Confederate Army to defend Petersburg. It was named after Confederate generals Martin Witherspoon Gregg and John Gregg, who were both killed in action earlier that year.

The fort was a key defensive position during the Siege of Petersburg, which lasted from June 1864 to March 1865. It was the site of several skirmishes and ultimately fell to Union forces in April 1865, just days before the Confederate capital of Richmond was evacuated.

After the war, the fort was used for various purposes, including as a prison and a training ground for the Virginia National Guard. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and became part of the Petersburg National Battlefield in 1986.

Today, visitors can explore the fort's earthworks and learn about its history through interpretive signs and programs offered by the National Park Service. The fort is open year-round, and admission is free.
