Training in the practice of christian counseling is not provided by all organizations and it can vary greatly from one organization to another. Typically “networks” do not provide any training or accountability for the kind of training that their network counselors engage. That being said, some networks do require you to complete certain training with their organization before including you in their network. Neither do many private practice counseling centers. In fact, if a private practice counseling center’s therapists are “independent contractors” the law restricts the kind of training that the practice can provide. If the therapists of practice are “employees”, on the other hand, a company can require extensive training and accountability.
Christian counselors provide counseling services, rehabilitation support and advice from a spiritual perspective. In this career, you might help clients suffering from mental health issues, addictions, disabilities or trauma. Your clients may include children, adolescents, adults and families. If you specialize in mental health counseling, you would use therapeutic techniques and christian principles to treat people suffering from substance abuse problems, stress, anxiety or depression. In marriage and family counseling, you would use family systems techniques and theories to open lines of communication within families.
Although it sounds rudimentary, the christian counselor must first be sure of his or her faith. Personal faith is at the root of the desire and ability to become a christian counselor. Types of Christian Counseling
While there aren't necessarily any types of christian counseling, there are multiple subcategories in which christian counseling can be integrated into such as psychotherapy, christian psychology, bible counseling, and pastoral counseling. Each of these categories are all very different and offer varying contributions to a person's life.
