If you require longer-term therapy than Counseling and Psychological Services can provide, you will be referred to outside resources. If short-term one-on-one therapy, small groups, and workshops best meet your needs, or if out-of-clinic treatment is preferable, you and your therapist will decide together. During your treatment, you and your therapist will decide which focus areas should be addressed and what your goals should be.

Your therapist will work with you to determine what are realistic goals for you during your brief therapy session. In order for therapy to be effective, you will need to reflect on issues discussed between sessions and continue working on changes that you want to or need to make. The type of counseling you receive will depend on the issues you wish to address, your counselor's approach, and your goals.
An in-person counseling session and consultation services will be recommended to you if the counselor recommends an in-person counseling session and consultation services. If the therapist recommends individual counseling, you may not be assigned the same therapist as during your initial consultation. Counselors and clients decide how many counseling sessions are best for you based on their needs and CWC resources. Through our group counseling programs or referrals to community therapists, we may also help connect you with longer-term counseling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Self-paying clients choose therapy for a variety of reasons. A few people are not interested in letting their insurance company dictate how they are diagnosed or treated with mental health issues. For a therapist to be able to bill an insurance company for treatment, the client must first be officially diagnosed with a mental disorder. It is my experience that I treat a large number of clients who do not have a diagnosis of mental health issues or disorders. Managing your healthcare is the purpose of managed care. It is possible that some people may not feel comfortable with multiple people working at an insurance company having access to their personal information, or they may not want to be labelled as mentally ill. Some clients may want their diagnosis and treatment plan confidential, while others may be okay with a therapist giving them a diagnosis. In some cases, people simply do not wish to share any information regarding their mental health status, including that they are seeing a therapist, with anyone other than their therapist or other trusted, known people.
