Assessing the Handle Mechanism

For most standard two-handle showers, the set screw—the small but crucial link between the handle and the stem—is usually hidden. Look closely at the base of the handle where it meets the wall. You might find a small hole, or the screw might be concealed under a decorative plastic cap that clips over the base. Gently pry this cap off with a flathead screwdriver to reveal the screw.
The Primary Removal Technique
With the water off and the set screw located, you are ready to apply controlled force. The goal is to loosen the handle without causing any metal fatigue.

- Fit the correct-sized wrench or socket onto the set screw and turn it counter-clockwise to loosen it completely. Do not force it if it resists; check for additional hidden screws.
- Grip the handle firmly with an adjustable wrench or a strap wrench to get a solid purchase.
- Apply steady, direct upward pressure. If the handle is stuck, do not jerk it. Instead, try gently wiggling it side to side to break the corrosion bond.

Extracting the Stem
Once the handle is off, you might find that the problem persists. The stem—the rod that extends from the valve into the handle—can also become corroded internally. If the handle is loose but will not slide off, the stem might be the remaining obstruction.
To remove the stem, you usually need to access it from behind the wall. Turn the shower handle to the "On" position to move the stem as far out as possible. Use channel-lock pliers to grip the exposed end of the stem and rotate it counter-clockwise.
