Understanding the Basics of Origami

Before we start, it's essential to understand some basic origami terms and techniques. Origami uses a few fundamental folds, such as valley folds (folding towards yourself) and mountain folds (folding away from yourself). It also uses the concept of 'symmetry,' where one side of the paper is a mirror image of the other.

For this origami vase, we'll be using a square piece of paper. If you're using colored paper, you can choose a color that matches your child's bedroom or a vibrant hue that adds a pop of color to their space.

Preparing the Paper

Start with a square piece of paper. If you don't have origami paper, you can use regular printer paper and cut it into a square. The size of the paper will determine the size of your vase, so feel free to experiment with different sizes.

For this project, we'll be using a 6x6 inch (15x15 cm) square piece of paper. This size is perfect for little hands and creates a vase that's not too small or too large.

Making the Initial Folds

Begin by folding the paper in half diagonally to form a triangle. Then, unfold it to create a crease. Next, fold the paper in half along the other diagonal to create another crease. Unfold the paper, and you should now have an 'X' crease on your square.

Now, fold the paper in half horizontally and vertically to create a smaller 'X' crease on the square. Unfold the paper, and you should have a 'plus' sign (+) crease on your square. This will help you make the next folds more accurately.

Folding the Squares

Using the creases you've made, fold the paper inwards along the vertical and horizontal lines to create four smaller squares. The paper should now look like a smaller square with a '+' sign in the middle.

Next, fold the four corners of the smaller square inwards to the center. You should now have a smaller square with four smaller squares inside it. This is the base of your vase.

Shaping the Vase

Now, it's time to shape the vase. Start by folding the top two corners of the square downwards to the bottom. The top of the paper should now look like a triangle.

Next, fold the two sides of the triangle inwards to the center. The paper should now look like a square with a triangle on top. This is the basic shape of your vase.

Finishing Touches

To create the final shape of the vase, fold the top two corners of the triangle downwards to the bottom. The top of the paper should now look like a smaller triangle.

Finally, fold the two sides of the smaller triangle inwards to the center. Your origami vase is now complete! You can gently pull the sides of the vase apart to open it up and display it proudly.

Origami is a wonderful activity that combines art, math, and patience. Encourage your child to explore different origami models and see what they can create. Who knows, they might even invent their own origami vase design!
