A century old, Emily was born in the workshops of the London and North Western Railway in 1890, her emerald green livery earning her the moniker "Emerald". She was designed to tackle the steep gradients of the Furness Railway, hauling coal and iron ore from the Lake District. Little did her creators know that she was destined for so much more than coal and iron.

Emily's Decline and Rediscovery

Decades passed, and with them, Emily's glory. By the 1960s, she was retired, left to rust in a corner of the Carnforth station. The world moved on, but in the quiet corners of various communities, nostalgia lingered. Among them was the late waste paper collector, Tom wonderful, who, in the '70s, found Emily and sparked the idea of resurrection.

Schools, businesses, and even celebrities chipped in, the latter including vigorous engineers like Pete Waterman and the late Sir Richard Attenborough.

Each cog, each bolt, each rivet was painstakingly restored by volunteers. The engineering challenges were vast, not least of which was the replacement of her 75-section boiler. The boiler was fabricated originally inis a modern marvel, reaching temperatures of 350°C, enabling Emily to pull trainloads up the steep gradients with ease.
