Nestled in the heart of London's Brixton, Fire Station Artists' Studios (FSAS) is a vibrant hub that has been igniting artistic creativity since 1994. Originally a Victorian fire station, this unique space has been transformed into a thriving arts community, offering affordable studio space to over 150 artists each year.

History and Heritage

Built in 1899, the fire station served the local community for nearly a century before its decommissioning in the late 1980s. In 1993, a group of local artists saw the potential in this historic building and campaigned to turn it into an arts center. Their efforts paid off, and today, FSAS stands as a testament to their vision, preserving the building's heritage while fostering contemporary art.
Studio Spaces and Facilities

Spread over three floors, FSAS offers a diverse range of studio spaces, from small individual units to large, shared workspaces. The studios are designed to accommodate various artistic disciplines, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, and digital arts. Additionally, FSAS provides access to shared facilities such as a printmaking studio, darkroom, and a large project space for exhibitions and events.
Affordable Rates and Eligibility

FSAS is committed to supporting artists at different stages of their careers. They offer affordable studio rates, with priority given to artists who have recently graduated or are in the early stages of their practice. Applicants are selected through a competitive application process, ensuring a diverse and dynamic artistic community.
Community and Engagement
FSAS is more than just a place to work; it's a thriving community of artists who support and inspire each other. The studios host regular crit sessions, workshops, and events, fostering a collaborative environment where artists can share ideas, learn, and grow. FSAS also opens its doors to the public through exhibitions, open studios, and educational programs, making contemporary art accessible to all.

Exhibitions and Residencies
FSAS hosts a year-round program of exhibitions, showcasing the work of its studio artists and inviting external artists to exhibit. The studios also offer residency programs, providing artists with the opportunity to develop their practice in a supportive and stimulating environment.
Sustainability and Accessibility

FSAS is committed to sustainability and accessibility. The building has been retrofitted to improve energy efficiency, and the studios offer disabled access. FSAS also provides support to artists with disabilities, ensuring that the studios are accessible to all.
